# Crystal Park: legal collecting field guide Canonical page: https://lithomap.app/resources/field-trips/crystal-park-montana Last access and rule review: September 18, 2026 Page purpose: Original LithoMap trip-planning reference for an explicitly authorized rock, mineral, or non-dinosaur fossil collecting destination. ## Direct answer A Forest Service day-use mineral collection area with about 30 acres of designated quartz-crystal digging ground and a seasonal host. ## Location and material - State: Montana - Area: Pioneer Mountains near Wise River - Category: Mineral collecting - Collection status: Collecting allowed - Expected material: Quartz crystals, Smoky quartz, Amethyst ## Authorization The Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest expressly permits hand digging inside the posted Crystal Park collection area after payment of the current recreation fee. ## Access Paved routes reach the parking area, followed by a short walk. The site provides toilets, picnic facilities, a hand-pump well, and an accessible trail, but overnight camping is not allowed at Crystal Park. ## Tools, limits, and season - Tools: Hand tools only. No tunneling, unsafe holes, overhanging banks, digging beneath trees, or excavation within five feet of trails, parking, signs, toilets, fences, and other facilities. - Limits: No commercial digging. The Forest Service limits digging to five days per person per season; current posted rules and fees control. - Season and current status: Normally open from late May through late October, sunrise to sunset, depending on snow and road conditions. ## Conditions - Pay the current day-use fee. - Dig only inside the kiosk-mapped area. - Keep excavations stable and free of overhangs. - Keep dogs leashed and pack out all waste. ## Geology Quartz crystallized in veins and cavities as the Pioneer Batholith cooled roughly 72 million years ago. Weathering later freed clear, milky, smoky, and occasionally purple quartz from the granite. ## Field plan 1. Confirm the seasonal opening with the Dillon Ranger District. 2. Read the kiosk map before choosing a spot. 3. Trace weathered vein material without undercutting. 4. Protect sharp crystal points during packing. 5. Leave the excavation stable. ## Safety - Never occupy an unsafe hole or tunnel. - Place loose rocks away from excavation edges. - Expect rapidly changing mountain weather. ## Official sources - Crystal Park visitor brochure and rules — U.S. Forest Service: https://www.fs.usda.gov/media/44164 This guide is not a permit, reservation, boundary survey, legal opinion, guarantee of access, or promise of a find.
