Page purpose: Original LithoMap trip-planning reference for an explicitly authorized rock, mineral, or non-dinosaur fossil collecting destination.

## Direct answer

A seasonal private surface mine where paid visitors receive instruction, use approved tools, and keep the quartz crystals they find.

## Location and material

- State: New York
- Area: Herkimer, New York
- Category: Mineral collecting
- Collection status: Collecting allowed
- Expected material: Doubly terminated quartz, Quartz clusters, Dolostone matrix

## Authorization

The operator expressly authorizes admitted guests to prospect in its above-ground mine and keep their finds during operating hours.

## Access

Registration, current admission, and check-in are required. The operator publishes a seasonal schedule and may close for snow, sleet, heavy rain, thunderstorms, or other unsafe conditions.

## Tools, limits, and season

- Tools: Admission includes a hammer. Visitors may bring approved hand tools, but powered equipment and tools heavier than the operator’s stated limit are prohibited.
- Limits: The operator currently states that guests may keep what they find. That permission applies to the paid mine area and not to neighboring land.
- Season and current status: Seasonal; consult the official mine page for the current opening date, daily hours, weather closures, and prices.

## Conditions

- Register and pay before entering.
- Closed-toe shoes are required.
- Follow the safety instruction and current tool limits.
- Children must meet the operator’s supervision rules.

## Geology

The so-called Herkimer diamonds are naturally faceted quartz crystals, not carbon diamonds.

Crystals occur in cavities within ancient dolostone and may be clear, included, twinned, clustered, or broken.

## Field plan

1. Check the current season and weather.
2. Register and complete instruction.
3. Start with loose mine material.
4. Use eye protection before striking rock.
5. Have uncertain finds reviewed by mine staff.

## Safety

- Flying fragments make safety glasses essential.
- Closed-toe shoes and gloves protect against sharp dolostone.
- Stop work during lightning or a staff closure.
