# Mount Apatite Park: legal collecting field guide Canonical page: https://lithomap.app/resources/field-trips/mount-apatite-park-maine Last access and rule review: September 18, 2026 Page purpose: Original LithoMap trip-planning reference for an explicitly authorized rock, mineral, or non-dinosaur fossil collecting destination. ## Direct answer A city-owned park where amateur collectors may use hand tools in the historic quarry and mine-dump area under a clearly published depth limit. ## Location and material - State: Maine - Area: Auburn, Maine - Category: Mineral collecting - Collection status: Collecting allowed - Expected material: Apatite, Tourmaline, Quartz, Feldspar ## Authorization Auburn’s park rules permit amateur mineral and gem collecting only among the exposed resources in the area known as the mines. ## Access The park is open dawn to dusk year-round. Visitors walk the trail network to the quarry and dump areas; there are no toilet facilities at the quarries. ## Tools, limits, and season - Tools: Hand tools only, to a maximum exploration depth of two feet. Generators, compressors, pumps, and other mechanized exploration equipment are prohibited. - Limits: Amateur specimen collecting only in the mine and quarry dump area. Plants, animals, firewood, and other park resources may not be removed. - Season and current status: Open year-round from dawn to dusk, but snow, ice, mud, and flooded quarry conditions can make collecting impractical or hazardous. ## Conditions - Collect only in the mine and quarry dump area. - Keep all work shallower than two feet. - Use no powered equipment. - Do not enter water or damage vegetation. ## Geology Coarse-grained granite pegmatite produced unusually large feldspar, quartz, mica, apatite, and tourmaline crystals. Historic dumps are disturbed rock piles, so a loose specimen may no longer preserve its original bedrock position. ## Field plan 1. Download the city trail map and rules. 2. Walk to the authorized mine-dump area. 3. Inspect loose rock before shallow hand work. 4. Label finds by park and date. 5. Leave trails and slopes stable. ## Safety - Quarry walls are steep and some pits are flooded. - Never swim, wade, climb unstable faces, or roll rock toward people below. - Wear eye protection and sturdy footwear. ## Official sources - Mount Apatite Park — City of Auburn, Maine: https://auburnmaine.gov/departments/parks/mount_apatite_park.php - Park rules and trail map — City of Auburn, Maine: https://www.auburnmaine.gov/CMSContent/Recreation/Mt%20Apatite%20Brochure.pdf This guide is not a permit, reservation, boundary survey, legal opinion, guarantee of access, or promise of a find.
