Authorization

Where collection is allowed

Outdoor Sylvania expressly allows visitors to collect and keep fossils in the designated pit. The material is supplied from nearby working quarries so visitors do not enter active industrial areas.

Admission and parking are free. The digging quarry is seasonal, generally mid-April through October, with month-specific closing times and several posted holiday or event closures.

Tools and methods

Tools are prohibited. Visitors separate the soft shale by hand and may bring a brush and container.

Amount and use

Collect only in designated areas and remain inside the perimeter fence. The operator says visitors may keep what they find, subject to current posted rules.

Season and current status

The fossil pit operates seasonally. Check current hours, weather closure, and special-event closure before departure.

Conditions

Rules to confirm at the site

  • Use hands only—no hammers, picks, shovels, or similar tools.
  • Stay inside the designated fossil pit.
  • Bring a container and protect fragile pieces.
  • Pets are not allowed in the fossil pit.

An old webpage, saved map, app layer, social post, or prior visit cannot override a current closure, posted boundary, permit condition, mining claim, staff instruction, or landowner decision.

Geology

What makes the site geologically useful

The supplied shale records a Devonian sea and commonly contains brachiopods, corals, and other invertebrates.

Soft matrix permits low-impact hand separation, but weathered fragments can be incomplete or misleading.

Field sequence

A low-impact trip plan

  1. 1

Confirm that the seasonal quarry is open.

  2. 2

Bring water, sun protection, a brush, and small boxes.

  3. 3

Search loose shale before splitting pieces by hand.

  4. 4

Keep only specimens you can protect and document.

  5. 5

Use the fossil guides for group-level identification.

Safety

Site-specific preparation

  • The collecting area is open and largely unshaded.
  • Uneven shale and sharp edges require closed-toe footwear.
  • Do not cross the fence toward quarry or restricted ground.
