Authorization

Where collection is allowed

Collection is authorized only through the staffed Emerald Creek recreation site with a valid timed ticket and onsite mineral permit. Garnets may not be collected outside the site or while it is closed.

Advance online tickets are required. The standard approach includes a half-mile walk from parking, poor cellular service, no drinking water, and limited shade.

Tools, limits, and timing

Tools and methods

Staff provide the tools needed to dig, sift, and wet-sluice the prepared material. Follow the orientation and site procedures rather than bringing an independent excavation setup.

Amount and use

The official 2026 listing limits each person to one permit per calendar year and two pounds of garnet material per day.

Season and current status

For 2026, Recreation.gov lists Thursday-through-Saturday operations from May 21 through the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. Tickets use a rolling booking window. Recheck before planning.

Conditions

Rules to confirm at the site

  • Reserve the correct person, date, and time slot.
  • Bring a printed ticket because service is unreliable.
  • Collect only during the permit session inside the recreation site.
  • Pets are not allowed in the recreation site.

An old webpage, saved map, app layer, social post, or prior visit cannot override a current closure, posted boundary, permit condition, mining claim, staff instruction, or landowner decision.

Geology

What makes the site geologically useful

The site is noted for almandine star garnets whose internal inclusions can produce a reflective star after expert cutting.

Raw material does not guarantee a visible star, gem quality, or economic value.

Field sequence

A low-impact trip plan

  1. 1

Weigh and retain no more than the permit allows.

Safety

Site-specific preparation

  • No drinking water is provided and shade is limited.
  • The remote site has poor connectivity.
  • Wet surfaces, lifting, and repetitive screening require reasonable pacing.
