Rules

Tools, limits, and timing

Tools and methods

Search the surface and loose red soil by hand. Current guided-hunt rules prohibit digging tools.

Amount and use

A small number for personal use only. No commercial digging or removal from outside the designated hunt area.

Season and current status

Check park alerts, program schedule, parking, weather, and hunt-site status.

Conditions

Rules to confirm at the site

  • Use the official hunt site.
  • Surface search without tools.
  • Take only a small personal-use quantity.
  • Protect roots and restore lightly disturbed loose soil.

An old webpage, saved map, app layer, social post, or prior visit cannot override a current closure, posted boundary, permit condition, mining claim, staff instruction, or landowner decision.

Geology

What makes the site geologically useful

Staurolite crystals weather from surrounding schist and persist because they resist weathering better than the host rock.

Cross-shaped twins occur in several intersection patterns; a single crystal is still staurolite even without a cross.

Field sequence

Begin with observation or surface searching and make the smallest possible disturbance.

  4. 4

Photograph context before handling any material that the current rules allow you to keep.
