What this visit allows
Minnesota DNR operates seasonal guided mine tours and expressly prohibits collecting rock or artifacts in state parks and on the underground tour.
Reserve or confirm a tour, accessibility needs, age or equipment restrictions, current hours, and surface-facility status.
Tools, limits, and timing
Tools and methods
Camera where allowed and notebook only. Bags are restricted underground; no sampling, hammering, or artifact removal.
Amount and use
Observation and photography only. All rocks and artifacts remain at the site.
Season and current status
Tours are seasonal; check reservations, closures, and arrival instructions.
Rules to confirm at the site
- Remain with the guide.
- Collect nothing.
- Follow underground equipment restrictions.
- Do not touch machinery or enter closed workings.
An old webpage, saved map, app layer, social post, or prior visit cannot override a current closure, posted boundary, permit condition, mining claim, staff instruction, or landowner decision.
What makes the site geologically useful
The tour exposes very old volcanic rocks and iron-bearing units central to Minnesota’s mining history.
Mine structures reveal extraction history but are also industrial hazards and cultural artifacts.
