Where collection is allowed
Auburn’s park rules permit amateur mineral and gem collecting only among the exposed resources in the area known as the mines.
The park is open dawn to dusk year-round. Visitors walk the trail network to the quarry and dump areas; there are no toilet facilities at the quarries.
Tools, limits, and timing
Tools and methods
Hand tools only, to a maximum exploration depth of two feet. Generators, compressors, pumps, and other mechanized exploration equipment are prohibited.
Amount and use
Amateur specimen collecting only in the mine and quarry dump area. Plants, animals, firewood, and other park resources may not be removed.
Season and current status
Open year-round from dawn to dusk, but snow, ice, mud, and flooded quarry conditions can make collecting impractical or hazardous.
Rules to confirm at the site
- Collect only in the mine and quarry dump area.
- Keep all work shallower than two feet.
- Use no powered equipment.
- Do not enter water or damage vegetation.
An old webpage, saved map, app layer, social post, or prior visit cannot override a current closure, posted boundary, permit condition, mining claim, staff instruction, or landowner decision.
What makes the site geologically useful
Coarse-grained granite pegmatite produced unusually large feldspar, quartz, mica, apatite, and tourmaline crystals.
Historic dumps are disturbed rock piles, so a loose specimen may no longer preserve its original bedrock position.
