Wiley Well District Geode Beds

A remote BLM desert district long used for geode hunting, approached by graded dirt roads whose condition changes after rain and maintenance.

Why is this site included?

BLM identifies the Wiley Well District Geode Beds as a public recreation destination. Casual collection still requires confirmation that the exact ground is open BLM land and outside claims, wilderness, protected sites, and closures.

Authorization

Where collection is allowed

BLM identifies the Wiley Well District Geode Beds as a public recreation destination. Casual collection still requires confirmation that the exact ground is open BLM land and outside claims, wilderness, protected sites, and closures.

The approach south from Interstate 10 becomes graded dirt and can be badly washboarded or impassable after rain. Contact the El Centro Field Office for current route and land-status information.

Rules

Tools, limits, and timing

Tools and methods

Use hand tools only where casual collection is currently permitted. Motorized or mechanical collecting devices are not allowed under California casual-use guidance.

Amount and use

California BLM guidance sets a general personal-use ceiling of 25 pounds plus one piece per day and 250 pounds per calendar year, unless a site-specific rule is more restrictive.

Season and current status

Winter is generally cooler, but rain can make the road unsuitable. Summer desert heat can be life-threatening.

Conditions

Rules to confirm at the site

  • Verify land status and claims before collecting.
  • Stay out of wilderness and protected cultural or fossil sites.
  • Use no motorized collecting device.
  • Keep within the current personal-use limit.

An old webpage, saved map, app layer, social post, or prior visit cannot override a current closure, posted boundary, permit condition, mining claim, staff instruction, or landowner decision.

Geology

What makes the site geologically useful

Silica-rich nodules and geodes occur in the broader desert volcanic terrain.

A rounded exterior does not guarantee a hollow or crystal-lined center; open specimens later with controlled equipment.
