Where collection is allowed
BLM publishes Chambless as a rock collecting area. Visitors must verify the exact collecting boundary because nearby wilderness, claims, cultural resources, and mine features are not automatically included.
Use the current BLM route, map, and Needles Field Office advice. Desert roads and washes can change after storms.
Tools, limits, and timing
Tools and methods
Ordinary hand tools only where current BLM rules allow. Never enter shafts, adits, pits, or other workings.
Amount and use
California BLM personal-use limits generally apply: no more than 25 pounds plus one piece per day and 250 pounds per year, unless current site rules are tighter.
Season and current status
Cooler months are generally safer. Avoid the area during extreme heat, flood risk, fire restrictions, or road closures.
Rules to confirm at the site
- Confirm the collecting boundary before removing anything.
- Do not collect in wilderness or on active claims.
- Leave fossils, artifacts, and historic objects in place.
- Never enter a mine opening.
An old webpage, saved map, app layer, social post, or prior visit cannot override a current closure, posted boundary, permit condition, mining claim, staff instruction, or landowner decision.
What makes the site geologically useful
The area exposes a varied desert rock assemblage that includes iron minerals, epidote-bearing material, limestone, and marble.
Magnet response and streak can help separate magnetite and hematite, but do not perform destructive tests on a promising specimen in the field.
A low-impact trip plan
- 1
Obtain the current BLM map.
- 2
Check land status and weather.
- 3
Surface search inside the confirmed area.
- 4
Use a hand lens and magnet for preliminary sorting.
- 5
Take only a small representative collection.
Site-specific preparation
- Abandoned mine features can collapse or contain bad air.
- Desert heat and flash floods are serious.
- Sharp rock and magnetic iron fragments require eye and hand protection.
